Gottman Method Couples Therapy

A research-backed framework to understand relationship patterns and build sustainable connection.

The Gottman Method is one of the most extensively researched approaches to couples therapy. Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman over four decades of research, it gives couples a concrete, practical framework for understanding what erodes relationships over time and what builds them.

What the Research Shows

The Gottman Institute’s research identified specific patterns that predict relationship breakdown with remarkable accuracy, what they call the “Four Horsemen”: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. These aren’t character flaws. They’re habitual responses that develop over time and can be changed.

The research also identified what thriving relationships do differently. They build what Gottman calls the Sound Relationship House: a structure of friendship, admiration, shared meaning, and the ability to turn toward each other rather than away.

What Gottman Work Looks Like in Practice

Gottman-informed therapy is structured and active. It often begins with an assessment phase where I get to know both of you, followed by targeted work on the specific patterns showing up in your relationship.

This might include:

  • Recognizing when contempt or criticism is driving a conversation and learning to shift to a soft start-up.
  • Building the ability to self-soothe and take productive time-outs when arguments become physiologically overwhelming.
  • Strengthening the friendship and admiration that underlies sustainable relational intimacy.
  • Developing rituals of connection that keep the relationship nourished over time.

Who Benefits Most

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is highly effective for:

  • Couples in recurring conflict who feel stuck in the same circular patterns.
  • Couples who have drifted apart and want to rebuild a solid emotional connection.
  • Couples recovering from a rupture or betrayal who need a concrete path to rebuild trust.
  • Couples navigating major transitions (parenting, empty nest, retirement, or external stress).

I have completed Level 1 and Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. This training has deepened my ability to work with couples navigating a wide range of concerns, including conflict, emotional distance, infidelity, and the impact of trauma on the relationship.
