Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD

Breaking the loop of intrusive thoughts and compulsions with evidence-based, compassionate care.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related conditions.

I bring specialized ERP training alongside a whole-person, compassionate orientation, understanding that OCD is not a character flaw, but a challenging neurological loop that can feel exhausting and isolating.

How ERP Works: Breaking the Cycle

OCD operates through a highly specific and reinforcing cycle:

  1. The Trigger / Intrusive Thought leads to high anxiety or distress.
  2. The Compulsion (checking, cleaning, mental rituals, reassurance-seeking, or avoidance) is performed to reduce the distress.
  3. Temporary Relief is achieved, which neurologically tells your brain that the compulsion was necessary to stay safe.
  4. This reinforces the cycle, making the intrusive thoughts return stronger and more frequently over time.

ERP can break this cycle.

By gradually exposing you to the thoughts or situations that trigger your OCD, while supporting you to resist carrying out the compulsive response, your nervous system is given a chance to learn a new lesson.

Over time, your brain discovers that the intrusive thought is not an actual threat, the anxiety settles on its own, and the compulsion becomes unnecessary.

A Collaborative, Step-by-Step Hierarchy

This work is not about forcing you into overwhelming or terrifying situations. ERP is a careful, collaborative, and highly structured process:

  • We construct a customized exposure hierarchy together.
  • We start with triggers that feel challenging but highly manageable.
  • We move entirely at your pace, giving you complete agency over when and how we take the next step.

What ERP Can Address

Specialized ERP therapy is highly effective for a wide range of OCD presentations:

  • Checking compulsions: locks, appliances, emails, messages, or driving routes.
  • Contamination OCD: fears of germs, dirt, chemicals, or illness, leading to cleaning or washing rituals.
  • Intrusive thoughts: distressing, unwanted thoughts regarding harm, relationships, or taboos.
  • Scrupulosity: moral or religious obsessions and mental reassurance loops.
  • Relationship OCD (ROCD): chronic doubt and reassurance-seeking regarding your partner or connection.
  • Pure O: primarily mental obsessions accompanied by hidden mental compulsions.

An Integrative, Whole-Person Orientation

I am particularly attentive to the ways OCD intersects with early developmental trauma, religious backgrounds, identity, and attachment wounds.

For presentations like scrupulosity (moral OCD) rooted in high-control religious environments, or Relationship OCD overlapping with attachment anxiety, purely behavioral therapy can sometimes feel sterile. I weave in somatic awareness, parts-based depth work, and attachment security to ensure your treatment is both highly effective and relationally nourishing.
